History of the NMATA

The New Mexico Athletic Trainers’ Association began in 1983.

- On April 18, 1983, NM Governor Bruce King signed the NM Athletic Training Practice Act into law. The Practice Act established the duties of athletic trainers within the state and created the Athletic Trainer Practice Board. The Act took effect on July 1, 1983.

- It was decided that a separate association needed to be created to organize and advocate for athletic trainers. L.F. “Tow” Diehm was tasked with bringing this new association to life. On July 14, 1983, twenty-three athletic trainers came together at the Elephant Butte Inn in Truth or Consequences, NM. The goal of this meeting was to establish a lasting association. At the conclusion of the meeting, Dan Otero was elected the first president of the NMATA, and the initial drafts of the NMATA By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation were drawn up.
